Before your baby arrives

Pregnant mom talking with lactation consultant at home

Before your baby arrives we will sit down and discuss breastfeeding and how it might impact your life. If your past experience with breastfeeding was less than what you had hoped for, you may need some extra reassurance and guidance tailored to your specific needs. Pregnancy is a time to get clear on your reasons to breastfeed, think about long and short-term goals and share what you are learning with your partner.  In this visit you may also be surprised to find out that your partner has lots of questions about new babies too. We will discuss normal newborn behaviors and practice techniques such as proper positioning that foster your breastfeeding success. Together, we will create a breastfeeding plan that fits YOUR busy life. This is a private, customized breastfeeding class that is unique to only you. Remember, your partner or support person(s) are encouraged to join.

After your baby is born

Newborn baby breastfeeding

It's not unusual to feel uncertain after you get home and need some extra support. Having your baby in your arms and figuring out how to manage things once you're home can make you feel unprepared. By coming to you, it helps me assess your unique needs. After your visit, I'll give you a copy of the detailed plan of care we create which outlines what you should be doing, why and for how long. I'll also send a progress report to your baby's doctor. As an RN and IBCLC, I can work with the other members of your healthcare team and if needed, make other appropriate referrals to specialists in Colorado Springs. Your consult includes two weeks of follow-up care regarding the personalized careplan. Discounted  follow-up visits are available as well.

POSTPARTUM VISITS will include:

  • Infant weight check with a calibrated baby scale

  • Progress reports for your baby's doctor

  • Evidence-based breastfeeding advice

  • Review history of maternal and infant health, birth story and breastfeeding experience

  • Physical assessment of mother’s breasts and baby’s mouth and tongue (as needed)

  • Pre- and post-feeding weights (as needed)

  • Observation, assessment and hands-on assistance while feeding to optimize comfort

  • A personalized, written breastfeeding care plan

  • Two weeks of follow-up care regarding the personalized careplan (two 15 minute phone calls and unlimited emails)
